Microsoft releases Dynamics CRM 4.0 to manufacturing

Microsoft releases Dynamics CRM 4.0 to manufacturing
Latest version targeted at VAR channel with improved multi-tenant
capabilities

By Ephraim Schwartz
December 18, 2007

Targeted mainly at its VAR (Value Added Reseller) channel, Microsoft
Dynamics CRM Version 4.0 was released to manufacturing this week.

Version 4.0, code-named Titan, will be available in several versions: an
on-premises application, a partner or VAR-hosted version plus a version of
Dynamics hosted by Microsoft Dynamics CRM Live, the Microsoft-hosted
deployment.

All versions will share a single code base and the hosted versions use a
multi-tenant architecture.

Addressing its new upgrade message to its VAR channel, Microsoft officials
said Version 4.0 includes an upgraded version of multi-tenant that will
support multiple customers per server.

Other upgrades include a choice of 25 languages and support for multiple
currencies and embedded BI capabilities, including an ad hoc reporting
wizard that will allow nontechnical users to create custom reports.

Version 4.0 will also integrate with Microsoft's unified communications
platform, Microsoft Office Communications Server, along with its presence
and location features.

Although Microsoft will offer to host a version on its Live platform, the
channel is the backbone of its strategy, according to most industry
analysts.

Josh Greenbaum, principal analyst at Enterprise Applications Consulting said
that the Microsoft channel is so strong in the SMB market that it is the
envy of all the other software vendors.

"Everyone is trying to steal Microsoft channel partners. If you are an
enterprise ISV there is no better and more mature channel than Microsoft,"
Greenbaum said.

Microsoft and Novell have the two oldest legacy channels in the industry,
and Greenbaum called them, "the nuts and bolts wizards."

In a prepared statement, Microsoft said it relies on its strong network of
partner companies to bring technology to customers in the SMB marketplace,
claiming over 400,000 partners.

Dynamics CRM 4.0 is expected to be available in the first quarter.

Upgrading Business Portal 3.0 to 4.0

Since Microsoft has launched Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 and Business Portal 4.0, up gradation of Business Portal from version 3.0 to 4.0 has been an issue discussion. Questions are being raised that can Business Portal 3.0 be upgraded smoothly and efficiently to version 4.0. While contacting Microsoft the detail we get is like they just try to make us understand that soon Microsoft is launching an upgrade tool for Business Portal. Recently I with my team was engaged in up gradation task for one of our customer from GP9.0 to GP10.0 and BP3.0 to BP 4.0. Customer is extensively using Requisition management and can’t afford to loose and be in critical technical issue while upgrading. After some R&D and team effort we were able to do this and while executing this activity I found some answers which are creating issues in out minds related to Business Portal Up grade.

Is this an Issue? (What actually is the cause?)

To clarify the real problem lets first discuss some technical detail regarding Business Portal.

Business Portal uses following technologies to work

· Share point services

· Dot Net Framework

· IIS

· .NET

· Dynamics GP server database (SQL server)

Usually Share point service’s functionality with Business Portal creates ambiguity in our minds. We always relate issue of Share point services with Business Portal which is not fare. Point to understand is that Share point services is totally separate and independent product and so is Business Portal. Business Portal actually needs WSS platform to run and execute. Similarly Share point up gradation and BP up gradation both are independent. Here I would say once you get Share point at the point where it meets BP’s pre-requisite needs, then BP’s up gradation is as smooth as you update a virus definition in your antivirus software. Isn’t it great?.

What is upgraded and what is not?

Almost all the applications like Requisition management at BP are updated while up grading BP;

· All current data (new created requisitions, Approved Requisitions, Requisitions ready to be converted in PO’s) are up graded as it is. Which is greatJ

· Requisition Hierarchy is upgraded as it is.

· User’s permissions in requisition management are upgraded as it is.

Only thing that doesn’t up grade is Business Portal Security due to lot of changes in Share Point 3.0.

How to configure Business Alert for Dynamics GP (GL Module)

Hi Zeeshan,

Please follow these steps to create the business alert

1- Create New Business Alert

2- Use these tables in "select tables" window

GL00100

GL10001

3- Provide this relationship in "Joining Table" window

GL00100.ACTINDEX= GL10001.ACTINDEX

4- Define this alert formula in "Business Alert Formula" window

GL00100 ( GL00100_T2.ACTNUMBR_1 = 100 OR GL00100_T2.ACTNUMBR_1 =

200 ) AND ( GL00100_T2.ACTNUMBR_3 = 01 OR GL00100_T2.ACTNUMBR_3 =

02 ) AND

(GL10001_T1.DEBITAMT >= 50000 OR GL10001_T1.CRDTAMNT >= 50000)

5- You have done. Next you can setup the alert notification.
